Select Primary Attributes

Within a Custom Object, the platform allows you to optionally select up to five Primary Attributes. If selected, the platform will index the selected Attributes in order to increase the performance of Segments built using the Custom Object. If you know what Attributes you intend to use in Segment logic, you should consider selecting them as Primary Attributes in order to improve system performance when executing Segments. You can always build Segment logic using other Attributes not selected as Primary Attributes, but the Segment will not run as quickly.

The trade off when selecting Primary Attributes is that loading data into the Custom Object takes longer, as the platform has to index all the selected Primary Attributes. Conversely, segmentation using Primary Attributes will run faster.

Note: Once you deploy a Custom Object, you can no longer change its Primary Attributes.

To select the Primary Attribute(s) for this Custom Object:

  1. Select Program from the top navigation bar, then select Custom Objects from the side navigation menu. The Custom Objects screen is displayed.

  2. Search for and select the desired Custom Object (see Search for a Custom Object for more information on the available search options). The Custom Object Details screen is displayed, with the Definition tab selected.

  3. In the Key and Primary Attributes section, beneath Primary Attributes, select the desired Attribute from the Primary Attribute 1 drop-down menu.

  4. Optionally repeat the above step for Primary Attributes 2 through 5.

Note: You can't select the Primary Key to be a Primary Attribute.
